When the mutants come, open the gates and lure them through, then close the gates behind the mutants again to lock out any cannibal reinforcements allowing you to ♥♥♥♥♥ on the mutants only. What I usually did was create a courtyard, walled and gated at the front of my base. You're better off combatting them on the ground with open space to move around. The trap is destroyed once the tree on which it was installed is cut down.There really isn't any thought out base defense mechanics in the game yet. At the moment of activation it sends a bounder on the enemy, killing most targets instantly - only some of the mutants will survive, but they will still receive massive damage.
Rope Swing Trap - a trap that is installed on top of trees. 
You need to be careful, as a cannibal can be rescued by his/her companions. After activation, it catches the enemy's feet and hangs them upside down, without a way to escape, and the only thing left to do is to get rid (kill) of the captive.
Noose Trap - a classic trap, which anyone should be able to remember from cartoons. Happy Birthday Trap - this rather cute sounding trap is nothing more as a wall full of spikes, which ascent from the ground and slams in the face of the unlucky mutant who activated it. Provided that it hits its target, it will kill any cannibal in one hit - only mutants on higher difficulties can survive a close encounter with this machine. The trap is capable of killing several cannibals a tonce and seriously wound mutants, even on higher difficulty levels. Dead Fall Trap  it's a simple log with spikes attached to it, which fall down on the enemies upon activation. In the Advanced Traps you will find more sophisticated traps, designed to defend against enemies.
